We envision the project as landscape merged with architecture in a play of concave and convex geometries. The central idea in geometry begins with the circle drawn by Deng Xiaping at the beginning of the open transformation into Shenzhen. The circle of the bay continues into the landscape of the site with lotus flowers in overlapping circular pools.

The lush, tropical concave/convex landscape continues to the edge of the bay. The project consists of three main bodies that form an ensemble of convex and concave shapes. The “bowl of flowers” structure housing the Conference Center has a free span achieved by cables across a 120-meter circle. The floating lobby connecting to the Grand Hall also forms a shaded entry plaza for the 400-key hotel. Due to its unobstructed view of the bay across the adjacent landscape, the hotel does not rise to compete with adjacent towers. Instead, its profile is low with green roofs connecting and merging with the landscape and the bay in the near distance. A ceramic, white, porcelain frit on the glass curtain walls provides sun shading and emphasizes the simple concave/convex geometries of the architecture as it merges with the landscape.

 The interior structure is made of exposed white concrete and natural bamboo. State-of-the-art solar PV pergolas, recycled water, and geothermal technologies are at LEED Platinum level rating for the project. A second circular volume takes the shape of an elevated disk, hovering above the landscape and arrival plaza on the ground floor, providing natural shading for public spaces as required in tropical places like Shenzhen. This disk serves both as a pre-function space for the banquette hall and as a flexible cultural space for the Conference Center and the Hotel. A winding ramp circles the central space of the disk and allows patrons to experience the space and activities within in a dynamic, cinematic way.

The third volume in this composition corresponds to the hotel tower. Its footprint is the result of two circular facades of displaced center points, resulting in a slender plan that maximizes views to the Qianhai Bay while controlling the width of the building.

Pedestrian circulation is porous and seeks to connect people from the dense parcels to the east with the waterfront and park to the west and south of the plot. A playful network of landscape paths draws people into and across our site, connecting them with the waterfront less than 100 meters away.
