Urbanism:
At the core of Bremerton, three Workforce Housing buildings define a space of pedestrian quality with living above street level commercial, an ideal example of a living and working community for the 21st century.
Natural Light & Ventilation:
Two “Light Canyons” are carved through the block to make three buildings with generous light and air for all apartments, including eleven corner apartments per floor. Green balconies provide outdoor space for the apartments.
Scale & Proportion:
We propose an economical construction of wood over one-story of concrete, setting height limit of 65 feet by code. This scale provides very good sunlight and human scale to the whole urban ensemble. Golden section proportions of 1:1.68 give an overall order to the three buildings.
Ecology:
Ecologically, we aim for geothermal heating and cooling via radiant floors. Ecological building materials and common-access green roofs will be a green example for Bremerton.
− green roof as landscape and rainwater barrier
− geothermal wells supply energy for heating and cooling
− building utilizes ecological building materials
− rainwater collection used to feed water features
