The new Master Plan for the site of the former East Bremerton High School includes the re-use of the original gymnasium building, a new Boys & Girls Club by Rice Fergus Miller, and a new Youth Wellness Center and Music Pavilion by Steven Holl Architects. The center of the plan is a green campus featuring two large reflecting ponds, a channel of rain, a bosque of Ginkgo trees as well as Sugar Maples and Cherry trees. The landscape is designed to recycle ground water as well as to create an environment which has a special character in each season. The Cherry trees and hododendrons bloom in March and April, the Sugar Maple grove turns red-orange in September and October and the Ginkgo bosque turns golden-yellow in the fall. The new 8300sf Youth Wellness Center has three aims: 1. Health (North) 2. Nutrition (South adjacent to the kitchen garden) 3. Education (vertical opening on green roof) The Nutrition portion is centered around an open Cooking Theatre that has stepped wooden seating and a large pull-down screen for live projection of lesson details. The Education portion has studio classrooms with northern light for hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) classes, as well as art classes in Drawing and Painting to inspire children of all ages within regional reach. The Music Pavilion consists of an open air concert platform and seven rehearsal rooms. While six rooms are acoustically lined, the upper room is a tower of light and resonance. For recording it has a 1.9 second reverberation time. The Music Pavilion is 75% open-air and will be an economical construction in planar geometry. Lit at night, it becomes an inviting gateway for the new Youth Wellness Campus. Grey stained cedar construction matches the refurbished grey of the original gymnasium, which can accommodate larger musical events and rehearsals.
